Akihiro Kubota

Akihiro Kubota (久保田晃弘, b. 1960, Osaka Prefecture) holds a doctorate in engineering from the University of Tokyo, where he researched computational fluid dynamics. He has taught at Tama Art University since 1998 and is a professor in its Information Design department (Art & Media course). His practice spans satellite art, bio art, digital fabrication and sound performance with self-made instruments. His team's ARTSAT1:INVADER received an Award of Distinction (Hybrid Art) at Prix Ars Electronica 2015. Since 2023 he has developed "quantum computer art", beginning with an essay introducing the idea. From May to July 2025 he worked directly on the superconducting quantum computer at The University of Osaka's Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB), treating the qubit chip itself as a canvas.

Studies made by Kubota with QIQB, The University of Osaka, on a real superconducting quantum computer, published as a two-volume booklet (Ver. 1.0, August 2025) and shown at Expo 2025 Osaka. One volume develops a "quantum information aesthetics" that measures the beauty of quantum states through entanglement and entropy. The other, Quantum Chip Bitmap, treats the qubit chip itself as a canvas.
