Four reads to get your bearings

Concepts

The quantum ideas behind the work

Four properties of quantum systems that artists keep coming back to, and who works with each.

Superposition

A qubit holds a blend of 0 and 1 until it is measured. Artists render many states at once, before the collapse to one outcome.

Entanglement

Linked qubits share one state, so measuring one tells you about the other. It becomes a language for connection across distance.

Randomness

Quantum measurement is truly random, not pseudo-random. Works use it as a seed that no algorithm could predict.

Decoherence

Real hardware leaks into noise as qubits interact with their surroundings. Some artists treat that noise as the material itself.

Before quantum computers

Historical context

The relationship between quantum physics and art predates quantum computers. Salvador Dalí coined “quantum realism” in 1959, and the Surrealists explicitly referenced relativity and quantum mechanics.
