Quantum Void V

by Antony Gormley

About this work

A continuation of the Quantum Cloud series (2008–10). Rather than marking the body zone with a condensation of steel elements, the body zone is left void and is surrounded by a minimal penumbra of trajectories that suggests an energy field. Gormley describes the series as an attempt to evoke the energy-mass relationship of general relativity in material terms, and to replace the mass of traditional sculpture with a force field. The viewer is invited to walk around each work and project into its empty interior.

Technique

Each work is a three-dimensional web of straight steel bars, in stainless or mild steel, placed along intersecting trajectories around an empty figure-shaped space. Bar sections range from 2 mm to 6 mm square.
