About this work
A tribute to IBM's computing heritage, built from a 60 × 60-pixel drawing of the mid-1980s IBM 5160 PC. Huffman encoded each pixel as a qubit rotation on IBM Quantum hardware and drew the measurement results as clusters of dots on aluminum panels. Stray dots outside the outline are hardware errors, kept as part of the image. Metal was chosen to contrast permanence with quantum states that last microseconds. Shown in QUANTUM ART at Microscope Gallery, New York (2023).
Technique
Each pixel's grey value is mapped to a qubit rotation between 0 and π. Pixels are independent, unentangled qubits, run in chunks on IBM Quantum systems (from 5-qubit devices up to the 127-qubit Eagle generation) with 36 shots per pixel. The results are drawn as 6 × 6 dot cells in Processing and pen-plotted with paint pens.
