Quantum Landscape III
by Roman Lipski
About this work
A 2023 series of six fine art prints in which Lipski runs his digitised landscape paintings through Quantum Blur. The tool encodes an image into quantum states and reshapes it through interference, so each flat painting comes out as a topography, closer to a new three-dimensional artefact than a picture. The same process also drives his video, VR and sculptural work.
Technique
Quantum Blur, an open-source tool that began at hackathons and was developed with physicists from IBM Research, maps the brightness of each point of the image to a quantum state, like the height of water in a pool. Quantum operations then let the "water" settle, so the image spreads and interferes instead of simply losing detail.
