Teleportation Disk

by J. Russell Huffman

About this work

A circular relief that shows a quantum teleportation circuit as rings rippling outward like waves on water. Each ring records how the circuit behaved on real IBM hardware at that step, and backlit gaps mark hardware errors. The aluminum and brass echo the metals of a cryostat, and the round form suggests a dilution refrigerator seen from below. The louvered wall nods to Saarinen's IBM lab at Yorktown Heights. Huffman describes it as the first installation in New York generated with a quantum computer.

Technique

A three-qubit quantum teleportation circuit was rebuilt layer by layer as 16 separate circuits and run on an IBM Quantum Falcon r5.1 processor. Each layer's measured outcomes (000–111) set the shape of one ring, and errors relative to a simulator appear as gaps that let light through.
