Quantum Man
About this work
A walking man built from evenly spaced vertical steel slabs that stand for the wavefronts of a quantum matter wave. Seen from the front or back it reads as solid steel. From the side it almost disappears as light passes between the slabs, a metaphor for wave–particle duality: what the object shows depends on how you look at it. It was shown in Sculpture Without Walls 2006 in Moses Lake and won the people's-choice vote. A stainless-steel Quantum Man 2 (2007) is at the Maryhill Museum of Art.
Technique
Laser-cut steel plates set at regular intervals to stand for the wavefronts of a matter wave, along with painted steel and threaded structures built from computer-generated data.
