Bat hand blob wing (quantum hybrid)

by Libby Heaney

About this work

Prints from Heaney's 2022 solo show remiQXing still at Fiumano Clase, London, which turned the gallery into a showroom for QX, her fictional quantum-computing company. The Quantum Hybrids are watercolours of hybrid creatures, inspired by the liminal figures in Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, that were fragmented and recomposed by her own quantum code and printed on transparent acrylic. They are the source illustrations for her installation Ent- (2022). The show also included prints on mirrored gold Dibond (UNCHARTED, Potential – light) that consider the possible futures of quantum computing.

Technique

Since 2019 Heaney has written her own quantum code in Qiskit and run it on IBM's publicly available quantum computers. She uses it to scramble and recombine the pixels of scanned watercolours, so entanglement between pixels makes the image flow across the picture plane like a quantum wave.
