Cephalopod Alien - quantum deconstruction

by Libby Heaney

About this work

A print from Heaney's cephalopod studies, in which a watercolour of a tentacled creature was processed on IBM quantum computers so that entangled pixels drift fluidly across the image. She treats the cephalopod, with its distributed, alien-like intelligence, as a metaphor for quantum computing.

Technique

Since 2019 Heaney has written her own quantum code in Qiskit and run it on IBM's publicly available quantum computers. She uses it to scramble and recombine the pixels of scanned watercolours, so entanglement between pixels makes the image flow across the picture plane like a quantum wave.
